View Full Version : Replacing muffler
I'm hoping to replace my muffler this weekend, I am pretty sure this isn't too difficult a task. But I thought I would check in here and see if I could get any pointers or advice before flying at it by the seat of my pants.
Just a few bolts and such and then put the new one on like the old one was? This method has served me well most of the time so far...

Bring it to my house on Sunday and we will supervise. :pray2:

if you dont take it to marks, my number one suggestion is to presoak all the nuts and bolts with something like wd40.

well, i am trying to make it out there, but my car is not cooperating.
I'm about half way there, in jersey village, and my car just isn't going, again. It seems almost fine in first and second but then it just craps out...debating on whether to try to make it out there or not or if i should just head home...not really sure I can make it to either.

What started out as a muffler exchange turned into a full engine top end rebuild!
Sorry Jesa! We've all been there!

I enjoy teaching people how to work and maintain their cars. I will give Jesa the credit, she does most of the work herself. I only step in when bolts need to be broken. :smash:

Just replacing the heads. Has good compression and doesn't smoke. End play feels good so I don't see any reason to split the case. I would of preferred to just replace the exhaust studs but the push rod tubes were leaking and I couldn't get the broken studs out. At least I have rebuild heads sitting on the shelf ready to go. Should have the heads changed tonight and be ready to install tomorrow. :thumb:

Everything was put back together absolutely stock. Heater boxes and stock pea shooter exhaust. I heard her drive off last night and it sounded great. Haven't heard from Jesa so I'm assuming no news is good news.

You are happy? I'm thrilled!!!! And I bet my neighbors are pretty pleased as well (goodbye 3 minutes of grumble every morning at 7:50).
The Jinxmobile hasn't sounded or driven this great since it was new to me. Mark you are awesome. Joe thanks for documenting it all with your awesome, flashless, cell phone camera and for all your morale boosting banter!!
In conclusion: old engine seals are a pain. Pro-tip: make sure to put them in the correct way up...

I do have "tinker" sessions at my house in Tomball occasionally. I have been working on VW's since the late 70's (yea, I'm one of the old ones. :tsk:)

Thats cool..your not one of the old ones, you are one of the elite. My wife's family is close to Tomball, they live in Waller. Thinks for the input about the carbuerator. The VW's are new to me and I have alot to learn. The car is going to need some rust repair and just putting the engine back together. Thanks for the postings!
