What was your first VW?
Mine was an 85 Golf built at the old Westmoreland factory in Pennsylvania. I put about 250,000 miles on that car before I lost it. The engine outlasted the odometer. I'd drive all day and it would click over 3 miles. I wish I still had that car, I knew how to replace most of the parts on it.
Now I've got a Jetta and a Ghia. The ghia was my first German built VW.
So....what's your story?

my first vw was a 68 fastback my mom bought for me from gary kaufmans (G.K. on here) dad for $500 with a seized motor. it was literally the little old ladies car when they got it. it was all original and almost factory fresh, including the fuel injection. savannah beige with brown interior. probably the nicest vw i have ever owned. the rest of the story i dont want to tell as it makes me :hurt:
My first was a 74 std. Beetle.Drove through high school and then got hit by a student driver.I drove it home, they had to be toewd back to Al Parker Buick where they just picked up the car brand new.Yes the Fasty Danny bought from my Dad was a little old ladies car.She got the car new and was the only owner till us.Really cool story how we got it,but that might be for another thread.

My first VW was, and still is, my 71 Squareback. You all know her as NoMercy.
I have had quite a few Volkswages since but this one stays.
You have probavly never heard of the person I purchased the wagon from. He is
this guy in Houston named Alan Presley.
I have had this car for over 15 years. Wow! Time flies.

First VW was a 1967 beetle back in Pennsylvania, with the fenders held on by pop rivets and beer cans and the Frenched in look from a nice thick spread of bondo. The clutch pedal was held in the up position by a nicely matching red brick as most of the floor wasn't there. I drove that car for two years trying to replace what I could,I owe that car more than appreciation than any one since as every day was an education in automotive repair. If you doupt the brick story ask Cindy, shes been with me then and ever since. ( I think it was the cool car)

My first and only VW! It was bought, when I was thirteen, with a combination of my toothfairy and birthday money and what would have been my college fund...I guess. The highlight of my young life. Not only was it the coolest car imaginable (to me) but with it came the promise of independence and it was fun to tinker with - though I blame this period for my mechanical knowledge being limited to "that one thing goes there with that other bit that is shaped sorta like a...."
It is still my daily driver and honest to god I love my tiny jinxer! I just can't wait until I can post tales of my -second- vw. Hopefully a squareback, or I guess I'll settle for a thing.

My first vw was a yellow 74 bug. Bought it off a used car lot in Highlands.Car was missing the bottom half of the rear seat. I cut a piece of plywood for the bottom ,them laid in a set of cushions from a old love seat.Thats were everyboby wanted to ride!

I started out with a Green 77' bus. Not much to tell because I didn't have it for very long but many more came soon after.

'68 Ghia hardtop. Had to pick up the drivers side door to open it, then it would hang down about 2 inches.

I got my first bug from one of my dad's customer when he was selling Mac Tools back in '87. It was a SUPER clean no rust, never been hit, still original black '66 bug that I got for a $100 yep thats right. :becky: My dad repainted back black and we did the total Cal Look to it. I miss that car too I always street race every weekend and won alot of races too. Until this day everyone ( including the one I gave hell to running back home where the Angleton PD, Brazoria County Sheriff, DPS ) back home remembers that fast car. :noidea::car:

I traded in a 72 Z/28 for a New 73 Super. I had bought the Z with all my savings aquired from 14 years old on. I worked construction in the summer of 71 and made a fortune for a 16 year old kid. I went down with my Dad and bought the Z. The old man was more excited than I was. Telling the salesman how I was gonna get laid in that car?
I joined the Marine Corps a year later and learned the meaning of poor. Broke my heart to trade it in but I loved that bug as well. It was yellow with a Black interior. My 72 is yellow with a black interior although I never planned it that way.

My (our) first car was a 73 Ghia, pumpkin orange. Drove it back from San Antonio in 30 degree weather. :smow: Had a HUGE hole right under the passenger seat( from seat rail to seat rail). It was a rust bucket but it ran great! I sold it to buy the Goblin.

How about a picture since no one seems to have one up in here. This is the '67 responsible for it all. Wish I still had it...

All VWs are pretty...maybe I shouldn't say that...some can be really over-accessorized.

I remeber that. It was on CL right?.... Black and white seats?....
Looked nice but the nose scared me off. The PO told me he hit the back of his garage
and crunched it. Cool car. Nice to see another one on the road and a '69 to boot!!

My first an only vw is the one I got back in octoberish(yes, it is a month) haha. My brother had it along with his collection of cars and his plan was to make a pick up out of it, but he was too lazy to do anything so it just sat there. all the body and gaps are pretty straight with zero rust and brand new pans. he payed 800 bucks for it and a whole lot of parts. Later, he got in a bit of a spat with his landlord and decided to move. the only problem for him was... he had nowhere to put the bug. So after a 2 or 3 mile road trip with a shifty towbar behind a 65 econoline, i got my 70 bug free of charge from my big brother. =)
now, im gonna make it a rat

When i started looking for my first i had a list of what i wanted; flat wind shild, strait pans strait body, vent windown (i strongly dislike one pice windows), one that ran for $2,000. IMPOSSIBLE u might say...and i would agree i got 5 out of 7. i had spotless pans, amazing body and it was a 1971 super so i got the windshild, it ran almost and i got my price. i still havent gotten different winsown but it does run now witch lead me to anothe story alltogather...

I have 2 1st VW stories:
1st VW ever, I was 15ish. A friend's dad got reposted (USAF) from Denver to Seattle. While packing, they discovered a 79 Rabbit 4 dr CIS they literally buried in the garage and forgot. They sold it to me for $1.
The Bunny had been sitting for three years. It apparently barely ran before it was parked, and it didn't run now.
We towed it home, hoping to start work and have a good car for me to drive when I turned 16.
Then our new neighbors tossed their old washer & dryer out on their yard and left them there for over a week. Not kosher. Another neighbor called the city, the city sent cops to enforce code, and the cops noticed my Rabbit.
The tags were 3 years expired, there was no insurance, the car had bricks behind each tire to keep it from rolling into the street, and in Denver your driveway is city property.
The fuzz left a warning on the door giving us 72 hours to get the car licensed and insured or out of sight. So my folks towed it that night to the Pull-n-Save scrapyard and got $50 for it. :(
My other 1st VW was a 71 super, red. I bought it running for $700 from someone who didn't know anything about VWs. The car didn't run right and the 'throttle cable' was speaker wire. The ignition wires were backwards, and so in quick order I had a nice DD Bug. Owned it for about a year. Rebuilt the 1600 DP and added an point-less 009, tuckaway dual glasspacks, and a set of Kadrons, as well as converted to an alternator.
Then came the snowstorm... A Papa John's delivery driver slid through a stop sign and T-boned me on the passenger side, totalling the poor Bug...
But I got another Bug out of it. And it fueled my passion. I've since owned a 92 Golf and an 87 GTI 16v, a 95 Jetta, and a 92 GTI. My buddy and I have also had joint projects with his 90 and 93 Corrados, an 85 Scirocco, helped his dad with a 73 Super, 74 Thing, 69 Bug, and 72 Standard Vert.

My very first VW was a 72 Super I bought for about $500 in Colorado Springs. It wasnt very pretty, but it ran like a champ. I did a tune up on it when I got it, then some routine maintenance every few months and that thing ran perfect with no problems for 3 years. Then I got rear-ended and it pretty much got totaled. That was the first car I had ever bought on my own... I miss that bug :(
