Last week, I purchased a 2001 Jetta for the daughter's first car. It was a change for us, as we have been nonstop Honda owners for 2 decades.

I have to say that we are truly impressed with the VW - it's slick and fast! My daughter is in love, and likely will never return to Honda :) As soon as possible, I intend to send her to car control school.

However, the 5 speed transmission has begun sticking after it warms up. A local mechanic who does not work on transmissions says that he's pretty sure its the "slider" and/or "syncros." It may require a rebuild. (D'OH!)

So my question is: does anyone here know and trust a (preferably not so expensive) transmission guy? We stressed the budget a little buying it (all cash) and would like to not get brained only a few days after purchasing it.

Bonus: If it's in the Humble/Porter/Atascocita area!

1 You can try to realign the shifter cables to see if it helps. (let me know and I can try to get some pics and drections)
2 Syncros are not too pricey just the labor part of it.

I have rebuilt my tranny twice and replaced parts inside. Hardest thing is getting a puller/press to get the gears on/off the shafts.

Is it just one gear or many? If so which one(s)?
